composition, article, essay, paper, prose, thesis, theme, dissertation 這些名詞均含“文章”或“論文”之意。

composition : 多指學校裡老師給學生的作文練習。

例如：My composition has not been completed yet.（我的作文還未寫完。）

article : 多指在報刊、雜誌上發表的非文藝性的文章，包括新聞報導、學術論文等。

例如：This is an article on the new club manager.（這是一篇介紹新上任的俱樂部經理的文章。）

essay : 指任何一種非小說性的，篇幅不長、結構簡練的文章，如論說文、報導、評論、諷刺性雜文等。

例如：It's an essay heavy with surplus phrasing.（這是篇廢話連篇的散文。）

paper : 正式用詞，多指在學術刊物上發表或在學術會議上宣讀的專題論文，也指高等學校的學期論文，或學校裡的作文練習。

例如：My paper consists of ten pages.（我的論文共10頁。）

prose : 專指散文。

例如：This is a page of well-written prose.（這是一篇很好的散文。）

thesis : 既可指畢業論文、學位論文，又可指一般的為闡述學術觀點而寫的論文。

例如：He argued his thesis well.（他為他的論點進行了有力的辯論。）

theme : 一般指大學或高中生作為作業所寫的篇幅有限、較完整論述某個觀點的文章。也可指作品或談話的主要論題。

例如：Of course their conversation alters, and new themes are bruited.（當然他們的談話也改換題目了，新的話題也悄悄地談開了。）

dissertation : 書面語用詞，指獨立研究後所寫的較為詳細的專題文章；也可指學位論文。

例如：We spend the final term writing our dissertations.（我們用最後一個學期的時間寫論文。）
